General Conference 1968 (Dallas): Methodists merge with Evangelical United Brethren

In 1968, the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to create the United Methodist Church (Discipline, 2000, p. 9). The 1968 General Conference also removed the prohibition on tobacco and alcohol and recommended the practice of abstinence (Moore, 2000b). The prohibition on tobacco and alcohol had been in place since 1939.
